Traoré’s Photo‑Op with Israel’s Ambassador Left Me Disappointed — But Here’s What It Really Means
A credential ceremony that looks big on camera but is politically hollow
I’ll start with the feeling: that moment when you see Ibrahim Traoré standing beside Israel’s ambassador, smiling for the cameras, and your stomach drops. You think: What the hell is this? After everything happening in Gaza, after Burkina Faso’s voting record at the UN, after the stance the country has taken internationally — why is Traoré welcoming an Israeli diplomat?
But once you dig into the details, the picture shifts. What happened on 26 June 2026 wasn’t a political pivot. It wasn’t a new alliance. It wasn’t a shift in Burkina Faso’s position on Palestine. It was a credential ceremony — the most routine, ceremonial, empty diplomatic ritual in the book.
Simon‑Clément Seroussi isn’t even based in Burkina Faso. He lives in Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire. He’s a non‑resident ambassador covering four countries at once: Côte d’Ivoire, Togo, Benin, and Burkina Faso. His predecessor, Rony Yedidia Clein, did the exact same thing. She lived in Abidjan, traveled around the region, presented credentials, took photos, and left. Israel has no embassy in Burkina Faso, no permanent staff, no real footprint.
This is why the photo is misleading. It looks like a bilateral meeting. It looks like a new partnership. But it’s just a formality — the kind every head of state is required to do, even with countries they barely engage with.
Burkina Faso’s diplomatic history with Israel is long and uneven. Relations were opened in 1961, cut in 1973 after the Yom Kippur War, and restored in 1993 under Blaise Compaoré after the coup that killed Sankara. Since then, Israel has kept its presence minimal. Non‑resident ambassadors, occasional visits, nothing deeper.
Africa Intelligence reported in October 2023 that Israel’s MFA leadership has been trying to expand its influence in West Africa, especially in Sahel states dealing with insurgencies. They framed Seroussi’s accreditation as part of that push. But even their reporting noted Traoré’s caution — that he approved the ambassador but is wary of Israel’s intentions, especially given Burkina Faso’s growing ties with Iran.
There is no evidence of Israeli intelligence operations in Burkina Faso. No joint security programs. No military cooperation. No contractors. No training missions. Nothing beyond the bare minimum of diplomatic protocol.
And when you look at Burkina Faso’s stance on Palestine, the picture becomes even clearer. Traoré hasn’t made public statements, but his government has. Ousmane Bougouma represented Burkina Faso at the Arab‑Islamic summit in Riyadh in November 2024 and stated the country’s position plainly: Burkina Faso supports a peaceful solution and recognizes Palestinian rights.
At the UN, Burkina Faso’s voting record under Traoré is consistently pro‑Palestine. Yes on Palestine’s enhanced UN status. Yes on the ICJ advisory opinion on occupation. Yes on the Gaza ceasefire resolution. Yes on Palestine’s participation at the 80th session. A few abstentions, but no votes against Palestine.
This is not the voting pattern of a government aligning with Israel.
So what does the ceremony mean? Honestly — nothing. It’s a handshake required by protocol. It’s a photo that changes nothing. Israel is trying to maintain symbolic ties in West Africa. Burkina Faso is keeping the door barely cracked, not open.
The disappointment makes sense emotionally. The optics are bad. The timing is worse. But politically, this is hollow. Burkina Faso hasn’t shifted. It hasn’t softened its stance. It hasn’t turned away from Palestine.
It received a non‑resident ambassador because that’s what states do when they maintain formal relations — even cold ones.
If anything, the ceremony shows how thin Israel’s presence in Burkina Faso actually is. A traveling ambassador, a credential ceremony, a photo, and nothing underneath it.
