It is despicable the way Palestinian citizens of Israel are being told to shrink themselves.
Across workplaces in Israel, Palestinian employees are being told to stop speaking Arabic — their own mother tongue — because it might make Jewish customers “uncomfortable.” Managers are demanding it out loud, as if it’s perfectly normal to demand that an entire people mute their identity so someone else doesn’t feel uneasy.
Middle East Eye documented cases where Palestinian workers were warned that Arabic could “trigger” people traumatized by October 7th. As if Palestinians — who have lived through decades of state violence, surveillance, land theft, and military rule — are somehow responsible for soothing the emotional fragility of the dominant, violent group of terrorist colonizers. As if their language is a weapon. As if their existence is a provocation.
This is a state project.
The 2018 Nation-State Law laid the groundwork by stripping Arabic of its official status and declaring that national self-determination in Israel belongs “uniquely to the Jewish people.” That law was a declaration that Palestinians inside Israel are guests in their own homeland — tolerated only when silent, invisible, and obedient.
Since the war on Gaza began, the mask has fallen completely. Lawyers say discrimination is now overt. Palestinian employees are monitored, reprimanded, and threatened for speaking Arabic even among themselves. They’re told their language is dangerous. Their identity is destabilizing. Their presence must be softened, diluted, made “palatable” for Jewish comfort.
It’s disgusting.
A country that claims to be a democracy is policing the language of the Indigenous population. A state that insists it’s “shared” is demanding that one group erase itself so the other can feel safe. This is the very definition of apartheid and ethnic cleansing.
Language is not just communication. It’s memory. It’s belonging. It’s the last piece of home Palestinians inside Israel still control. They cannot rewrite discriminatory laws. They cannot stop political crackdowns. But they can speak Arabic to each other, to their children, to their communities. And now even that is being targeted.
Suppressing a language is never about words. It’s about power. It’s about who gets to feel at home. It’s about who is allowed to exist without apology.
The cases documented by MEE are not isolated. They are part of a long pattern: Arabic downgraded in law. Palestinian political expression punished. Cultural symbols treated as threats. Now workplaces policing casual conversations.
The message the colonizing terrorists are conveying: Palestinian identity must be quiet, it needs to be completely erased. All for Jewish comfort.
Israel has spent years building the legal and social machinery to make Palestinian erasure feel normal. When a government signals that one group’s identity is secondary, society follows. And when society follows, discrimination becomes casual. Violence is expected as well.
Palestinians inside Israel are being told to silence themselves in the land they were born into.
Let that absurdity sink in.
