Once in a while it really smacks me in the face how nice it would have been to be born as a white man of Pelley's era. But the world has changed. You can get fired just for saying the word "genocide" nowadays.
Yet it's beautiful to see a man who still believes in the olden ways - even if he is oblivious to the reality of the opportunities he had were curated for him by excluding others. When Trump says that Pelley doesn't love his country that is the country he is speaking of - a country that can only be made "great again" by restoring the proper social order. Pelley doesn't seem to see the kind of force it will take to ensure the "nation's interests" or he would have fallen in line with the new regime.
In spite of this I do believe we were better off when you could express a strong opinion to your boss and show up to work the next day. I do think we were better off when jobs lasted a lifetime, becoming roles and missions and legacies.
We can only hope that Pelley's sacrifice is another drip that builds the sea of our resistance to the ideologies of hate from ICE to Zionism to white supremacy, whether he fully understands why it was so important to "make the protestors look more violent" or that Renee Good's tires weren't turned as far away from the man who killed her as they could be -- or why he actually believed he couldn't be fired.
