Mohammad Deif: The Shadow Commander Behind 10/7

Manufacture Dissent Exclusive brings you Al Jazeera’s documentary on The Mastermind himself, Mohammad Deif, in English. The events that led to October 7th, 2023, from the resistance point of view.

End of Year Special

For most of his life, Mohammed Deif existed somewhere between reality and legend.

Israel spent decades hunting him. Intelligence services tracked him across Gaza. Fighter jets targeted him repeatedly. Assassination attempts left him wounded, scarred, and, according to numerous reports, permanently disabled. Yet he kept reappearing, surviving long after many believed he had been killed.

To Palestinians who supported armed resistance, he became a symbol of defiance. To Israel, he became one of the most wanted men in the world.

The Al Jazeera documentary What Is Hidden Is Greater: The Secrets of the Shadow Man Mohammed Deif pulls back the curtain on a figure who spent more than thirty years operating from the shadows. Through previously unseen footage, internal documents, and testimony from those who knew him, the film traces the journey of a refugee camp youth who would eventually build the military machine that carried out the events of October 7, 2023.

What emerges is not merely the story of one man but the story of how a small underground movement evolved into a force capable of challenging one of the most powerful militaries in the region.

A Child of Displacement

Born Muhammad Diab Ibrahim al-Masri in 1965, Deif grew up in Khan Younis refugee camp in southern Gaza.

Like many Palestinian families, his own traced its roots to a village that no longer existed in the form his family once knew. His parents came from Kawkaba, one of the Palestinian villages depopulated during the war surrounding Israel's creation in 1948.

These experiences shaped an entire generation.

The Gaza into which Deif was born was overcrowded, impoverished, and marked by defeat and displacement. The political realities facing Palestinians were impossible to ignore. For many young men growing up in the camps, politics was not an academic subject. It was daily life.

Few who knew Deif during his youth could have predicted what he would become. He studied biology at the Islamic University of Gaza and even participated in theatrical productions. Yet the outbreak of the First Intifada in 1987 altered the course of his life and the lives of countless Palestinians.

Like many young activists of his generation, he entered the world of clandestine organisation and resistance.

Prison and Transformation

In 1989, Israel arrested him.

He was subjected to harsh interrogation and physical abuse while in detention.

Yet prison would prove to be more than a place of punishment. It became a political classroom.

There he met influential figures who were helping shape the future of Hamas. Discussions extended far beyond surviving imprisonment. They revolved around the future of Palestinian resistance itself.

When he emerged from prison, Deif was no longer simply an activist. He was becoming a strategist.

Building the Qassam Brigades

The 1990s were years of constant change.

Israeli operations removed one Hamas commander after another. Leadership positions opened unexpectedly. Younger figures moved upward.

Deif gradually became intertwined with many of the individuals who helped define Hamas's military wing. He developed close working relationships with commanders whose names would later become central to the organisation’s history.

As one leader fell, another stepped forward.

By the end of the decade, Deif had become one of the most important military minds inside Hamas.

His greatest contribution was not a single operation.

It was organisation.

He helped transform Hamas from a movement relying on small cells and limited resources into a structured military force capable of long-term planning, production, intelligence gathering, and coordinated operations.

The Man Israel Could Not Kill

Few figures in modern conflict have survived as many assassination attempts.

For years, rumours circulated endlessly.

Was he alive?

Could he walk?

Was he directing operations personally?

Had he disappeared completely?

The documentary provides some of the clearest answers to date. Rare footage shows him moving through tunnels, meeting commanders, inspecting facilities, and participating in operational discussions.

The scenes are significant because they shatter years of speculation.

Despite repeated attempts on his life, Deif remained deeply involved in military planning.

Every failed assassination only added to his mystique.

Among supporters, survival itself became part of the legend.

The more Israel hunted him, the larger his reputation grew.

Building an Army Underground

Perhaps the most revealing insight is how methodically Hamas developed under Deif's leadership.

Footage shows meetings involving senior commanders, including Yahya Sinwar, Marwan Issa, Mohammed Sinwar, Ahmed Ghandour, Rafa'a Salameh, Raed Saad, and Izz al-Din al-Haddad.

Together, these men helped oversee a military project that took decades to build.

Rocket manufacturing expanded.

Tunnel networks grew.

Training became more sophisticated.

Command structures matured.

What began as a small resistance movement slowly evolved into an organisation capable of waging sustained conflict against a vastly superior military power.

This transformation did not happen suddenly. It was the product of years of preparation, discipline, and strategic patience.

The Road to October 7

The most consequential chapter of Deif's life came in 2023.

According to documents, preparations for what eventually became the Al-Aqsa Flood operation began months before the attack itself.

Meetings examined regional developments, Israeli actions in Jerusalem, the status of Palestinian prisoners, and broader strategic objectives.

By October 5, the final operational orders had been approved.

Two days later, the operation began.

Whatever one's view of October 7, its impact cannot be denied.

The attack shocked Israel's military and intelligence establishment and shattered assumptions that had existed for years regarding Gaza, Hamas, and the balance of power.

For supporters of Palestinian resistance, it demonstrated that even after decades of blockade, surveillance, and military pressure, Palestinian armed groups retained the ability to launch operations on a scale few believed possible.

For Deif, it represented the culmination of a project decades in the making.

The End of the Shadow Commander

Israel announced that it had killed Mohammed Deif in a strike near Khan Younis in July 2024.

Months later, Hamas confirmed his death.

Yet the significance of Deif's story extends beyond how it ended.

His legacy is tied to what he built.

For Israel, Mohammed Deif was one of the most wanted men in the world.

For many Palestinians, he became something very different.

He was a product of the refugee camps, of military occupation, of imprisonment, assassinations, invasions, and decades of failed promises that never delivered freedom. His life mirrored the trajectory of modern Gaza itself. He grew up under occupation, spent years underground, survived repeated attempts on his life, and dedicated decades to building a force capable of confronting a far stronger adversary.

What Is Hidden Is Greater strips away much of the mystery that surrounded him. Behind the code names, audio messages, and grainy photographs was a commander deeply involved in shaping every stage of Hamas’s military evolution. The documentary shows not only the man himself but the network of leaders, fighters, engineers, and organisers who transformed a small underground movement into a force capable of altering the course of the conflict.

Whether admired or condemned, Mohammed Deif became one of the defining Palestinian figures of his generation. Few individuals have had a greater impact on the military balance between Israel and Gaza. Fewer still managed to evade one of the world’s most sophisticated security apparatuses for so long while continuing to direct operations from the shadows.

His story is ultimately larger than one man. It is the story of a people living under blockade and occupation, of generations raised in refugee camps, and of a conflict that has shaped every aspect of Palestinian life for decades. Deif’s rise emerged from the conditions that produced it.

As long as those conditions endure, many Palestinian resistance in one form or another will continue to emerge, regardless of who leads it. Mohammed Deif may be gone, but the realities that created him remain. That, perhaps more than anything else, is the central lesson of both his life and the documentary that chronicles it.
