Finally the UK had crossed the line — barely but enough to make Israel choke on its own arrogance. Britain announced sanctions against Israeli settlement activity in the West Bank and everyone knows it’s all lip service (the kind of move governments make when they want to look principled without actually doing anything that forces real consequences). But even symbolic moves get under people’s nerves sometimes and this one did.
The sanctions are on people and companies who expand settlements. They block imports of goods produced in illegal settlements; ban advertising for property in those settlements — all wrapped up in the usual diplomatic language about “international law” as if the UK woke up one day and realised that the settlements have been illegal for decades. As if Britain hasn’t shrugged at Israeli land theft since the beginning.
But here’s the thing: The UK has never sanctioned Israel before. Ever. They have sanctioned Russia, Iran, China random African generals whole Middle Eastern economies — but Israel? Untouchable. Golden child. The one country Western governments treat like a fragile museum artifact that can never be criticized (let alone punished).
So even if it’s symbolic slap — it’s still a slap. Israel felt that.
Israeli officials went absolutely bonkers straight away. “Outrageous” “hostile” “dangerous” all that dramatic language they use when someone dares say international law exists. British Israel‑lobby crowd too — MPs pundits think‑tank followers — barking on command accusing UK of betrayal antisemitism extremism whatever word they think will scare people back into silence.
They’re not just angry. They’re scared too. Because once one Western government crosses the line others will follow and Israel’s political survival strategy is based on unconditional Western protection — if that shield cracks even a little Israel panics.
This won’t stop settlement expansion. Israel will just keep doing what it does — build, annex, displace, kill and pretend it’s all “security”. But the political landscape around Israel is changing. The UK sanctions (weak as they are) show that Israel’s impunity isn’t endless; the old days of “Israel can do anything and we’ll applaud” are fraying away.
So yes it’s lip service. Yes it’s late. Yes it’s the bare minimum. But it’s also the first time the UK has ever dared put Israel on a sanctions list and that is enough to get the Israel‑First crowd going nuts — they scream because they know what this means: The world is sick of pretending Israel’s actions are untouchable.
Let them scream. They built their power on the assumption that no one would push back at all. Even symbolic pushback will make them piss their pants.
