The UN has documented more than 10,000 ceasefire violations since the Israel-Lebanon truce began in November 2024, with almost all attributed to Israel, occurring approximately every 53 minutes and resulting in at least 127 civilian deaths.
In a Sky News interview, Israel's UN Ambassador Danny Danon defends Israel's actions by accusing Hezbollah of rebuilding military infrastructure, restocking bunkers, and smuggling weapons and cash into Lebanon, but provides no public evidence to support these claims.
Danon criticizes the UN and UNIFIL for bias and failure to detect Hezbollah activities, noting that UNIFIL's mandate will end in 2026, and claims Israel shares monthly reports on alleged Hezbollah violations that are ignored.
UNIFIL, operating around the clock in southern Lebanon alongside the Lebanese army, reports no evidence of Hezbollah regrouping or rearming, only finding old, abandoned weapons caches and unexploded ordnance that date to earlier periods and do not indicate new activity.
The interviewer challenges Danon on Israel's disregard for the ceasefire, violations of Lebanese sovereignty (including border wall encroachments), and civilian casualties, such as the deaths of two toddlers in an Israeli strike, but Danon insists Hezbollah is the primary threat undermining Lebanese sovereignty.
Danon states Israel has no territorial claims in Lebanon and wants a strong, independent Lebanese government to control Hezbollah, warning that if Lebanon fails to act, Israel will intervene to prevent Hezbollah from rebuilding.
Historical Context on Ceasefire Violations
Israel, that ever-so-peaceful US-backed blue and white colony, has not had a ceasefire it didn't violate since the day of its inception in 1948, with a documented history of breaking truces in conflicts with Arab states and Palestinian groups, including violations of the 1949 armistice agreements that led to escalations in subsequent wars. Examples include the 2008 breach of a ceasefire with Hamas by launching a military operation in Gaza, killing Palestinians and derailing the truce.
In the 2014 Gaza conflict, visualizations show Israeli forces committing more violations than Palestinian factions during agreed-upon ceasefires. More recently, in Gaza ceasefires since 2024, Israel has been accused of over 738 violations by December 2025, including air strikes, shootings, and incursions, resulting in hundreds of Palestinian deaths and injuries.
While both sides accuse each other of breaches—such as Palestinian rocket fire or Hezbollah strikes—Western media has been criticized for ignoring or downplaying Israel's pattern of violations while amplifying unverified claims against the other side, often framing Israeli actions as defensive.
