Most Westerners grow up with a cartoon version of Iran’s history. A neat little story about a “crazy regime,” a “backward country,” and a “dangerous revolution.” What they never hear is that Iran once had a democracy. A real one. And the West destroyed it because Iran dared to say its oil belonged to its own people.
In 1953, Britain and the CIA ran one of the dirtiest covert operations of the 20th century. They toppled Mohammad Mossadegh, Iran’s elected prime minister, because he nationalized the oil industry. That was his unforgivable sin. Trying to help his own people. He simply refused to let British Petroleum keep looting Iran’s resources under a colonial concession that basically handed half the country’s land to one British financier back in 1901.
So the West did what it always does when a smaller nation steps out of line: economic strangulation, propaganda, bribed journalists, fake protests, paid mobs, and a CIA guy who went rogue and pushed ahead even after being told to stand down. They broke Iran’s democracy and replaced it with a monarch who ruled through torture, secret police, and American backing. And then they had the nerve to call Iran “unstable.”
This was a deliberate act of imperial violence that set off a chain reaction: the Shah’s dictatorship, the 1979 Revolution, the hostage crisis, decades of sanctions, and the endless “Iran threat” narrative that Westerners still swallow without ever learning what actually happened.
The truth is Iran didn’t “hate freedom.” Iran lost its freedom because Britain and America couldn’t tolerate a sovereign Iran controlling its own oil. Everything since then has been fallout from that moment — a moment most Westerners have never even heard about because their governments buried it for sixty years.
