A Mother Raising Newborn Twins Through a Genocide

Four sick children. Two newborn twins. One mother fighting to keep them alive. Om Sela is pleading for food, formula, and medicine before she loses them.

There is a mother in Gaza named Om Sela, and she is raising two newborn twins in a torn tent that barely holds together in the wind. The twins are only a few months old. They are sick. Her older children are sick too. And she is trying to keep all of them alive with no food, no medicine, and no safety.

Her family of eight has been displaced for two years. Their home was destroyed. They fled with nothing and have been wearing the same clothes ever since. Her son is seven. Her daughter is four. Her elderly in-laws are ill. Her cousin is doing what he can. And now there are two babies who entered the world under bombardment, into a tent with no warmth, no formula, and no diapers.

This is what it means to raise children in Gaza while a genocide continues. The bombs have not stopped. The starvation has not stopped. The targeting of babies has not stopped. And somehow, in the middle of all of this, a mother is trying to keep four children alive at once.

Her older children have caught the virus spreading across Gaza. The twins are sick too. She cannot afford treatment. She cannot afford formula. She cannot afford diapers. She cannot afford food. She is exhausted, frightened, and pleading for help.

Her needs are painfully simple.

Baby formula.

Diapers.

Food for her older children.

Medicine for all of them.

Clothes to replace the torn ones they have worn for two years.

A safe place to sleep that is not a shredded tent.

Ramadan is only days away. For Muslims, it is a month of giving, reflection, and caring for those who are suffering. It is the same way Christmas carries meaning for Christians: a time when generosity is not optional, when community matters, when no one should be left hungry or alone. Families around the world will gather for warm meals and prayer. Families in Gaza are trying to keep their children alive long enough to see the next sunrise.
