Al Jazeera’s new investigation brings forward what Palestinians have been reporting for years: rape, sexual torture and humiliation are being used inside Israeli detention sites as a deliberate method of control. The film gathers testimonies from former detainees who describe the same pattern of abuse, carried out in the same way, across different prisons and military facilities.

One of the central testimonies comes from Muhammad al‑Bakri, who says he remembers the exact day he was raped. He had already spent weeks beaten, tied up, and forced to sit in his own waste. On that day, he says, soldiers surrounded him with their dogs. “There were six soldiers on the right and six on the left,” he said. “They would ask your name. If you said ‘Muhammad’, they would say, ‘No, say your name is bitch.’”

Al‑Bakri says he was held with seven other prisoners. All of them were stripped, blindfolded and handcuffed. “We were raped after being stripped of our clothes,” he said. “We were shouting, ‘Oh Lord, oh God’, but they were just laughing and filming us.” He also described soldiers using dogs during the assault. “The dogs were following commands from the officers to [attack] us,” he said. The abuse lasted twenty to thirty minutes before the soldiers ordered them to dress and dragged them back to their cells.

At the beginning of the war, we were displaced to southern Gaza, specifically to Khan Younis. We ended up staying in a school on Salah al-Din Street, just like thousands of other families searching for nothing more than safety from bombing and death.

In the middle of that fear, some of our relatives called us and said they also wanted to come to the south and needed a place to stay. My father immediately replied, “Come. I will find you a good place.”

They arrived and stayed with us, and despite the fear surrounding us, their presence brought some comfort. We tried to support one another emotionally, sharing fear, hunger, and uncertainty while convincing ourselves that maybe tomorrow would somehow be better.

Sazan Island sits at the mouth of the Strait of Otranto, the narrow gate that decides who enters and exits the Adriatic Sea. Every navy that ever mattered in this region understood the island’s value. Empires fought for it. Dictators fortified it. The Soviets carved tunnels into it. Albania sealed it off for decades. It was never a leisure destination. It was a military instrument.

This is the ground Jared Kushner and Ivanka Trump now intend to turn into a luxury resort.

The deal was not announced to the Albanian public. It surfaced only after foreign reporting exposed it. By then, the government had already granted the project “strategic investor” status — a designation that accelerates approvals, bypasses normal scrutiny, and gives the investor unusual privileges. The timing was striking: the approval came immediately after Donald Trump’s reelection. Albanian officials denied any political motive, but the sequence raised questions that have not gone away.

The island itself is a relic of the Cold War. Its hills are hollowed out with bunkers, storage caverns, and reinforced shelters built to withstand bombardment. The Soviets used nearby Pasha Liman as their only Mediterranean submarine base outside the USSR. Sazan was part of that network — a forward outpost positioned to monitor and control the strait. The infrastructure remains. Concrete, steel, tunnels, and rusted military bones. No water system. No civilian grid. No roads meant for tourism. The island’s shape and position still matter more than anything built on top of it.

The project is not limited to Sazan. It includes a vast stretch of coastline in the Narta Lagoon and Zvërnec area — a protected ecological zone and one of the most important migratory bird corridors in the region. This is where the protests erupted. The financing behind the project comes from Gulf sovereign wealth. Kushner’s investment firm is backed by Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund, and the Albanian partners include companies tied to Qatar and the UAE. One of the Qatari-linked firms involved in the broader development has been under investigation by Albanian anti-corruption prosecutors. None of this was disclosed to the public before the deal was advanced.

The official narrative — that the Trumps “discovered” the island while swimming — collapses under the weight of the island’s history. Sazan is not a hidden gem. It is a known military asset with a strategic role that predates the modern Albanian state. Its position at the strait gives whoever controls it a vantage point over the entire northern Adriatic. That reality does not disappear because someone calls it a resort.

The deeper issue is not tourism. It is the backroom transfer of strategic land to foreign investors through a process shielded from public view. The coastline portion sits inside a protected zone. The island portion sits on a Cold War fortress. The financing comes from foreign governments. The approvals were rushed. The public was bypassed. The protests were met with force. The political timing was convenient. The explanations were thin.

None of this requires speculation.

A military island is being rebranded as a “luxury project for the elites”. A protected coastline is being carved up for private development. A chokepoint that once mattered to empires is being handed to a network of foreign investors. A government is pushing the deal forward while insisting nothing is unusual.

Sazan Island has always been a strategic asset. It still is. The island has not changed. The strait has not moved. The tunnels have not vanished. The island’s purpose was written into its geography long before any “resort” proposal appeared.

A fortress does not stop being a fortress because someone decides to sell it as a vacation.

On July 2, 1957, Senator John F. Kennedy walked onto the Senate floor to deliver a speech about French colonialism in Algeria. He was 40 years old, ambitious, and already seen as a rising star. The speech was meant to be about North Africa.

Kennedy said the United States had to acknowledge:

“the legitimate claims of the Arab refugees to repatriation or compensation for their lost lands and property, which we voted for in the United Nations in 1948.”

It was the first time a major American political figure publicly affirmed the principle that Palestinian refugees had a right to return to their homes or receive compensation. For Israel’s government, it was a shock. For American Jewish leaders, it was a breach of what they believed was a political red line.

Pressure came fast. Letters poured in. Accusations of irresponsibility, danger, betrayal. Rabbi Abba Hillel Silver, one of the most influential Jewish voices in the country, wrote to Kennedy calling the statement reckless. Kennedy did not bend. On July 23, 1957, he wrote back. He didn’t apologize. He didn’t retreat. He clarified only this: he had not demanded the return of every refugee, but he insisted the principle itself was legitimate and rooted in the UN’s own resolutions. He acknowledged Israel’s security concerns, but he refused to pretend the refugee issue could be erased.

The pressure didn’t stop. Meetings followed in late 1957 and early 1958. Kennedy listened, but he didn’t retract a word. Still, he understood the political landscape. When he ran for president in 1960, he spoke loudly about supporting Israel and almost not at all about Palestinian refugees. The subject would have been political suicide.

When he entered the White House in 1961, he tried a different approach. He appointed Joseph Johnson to explore a diplomatic solution. Johnson’s proposal in 1962 was simple on paper and impossible in practice: give each refugee a free choice—return, resettle, or emigrate elsewhere. Israel rejected it. Arab states rejected it. Kennedy let the plan fade.

A year later, in November 1963, he was killed.

What remains is the fact that Kennedy’s 1957 statement stands alone in American presidential politics. No president since has spoken as plainly about the rights of Palestinian refugees.

The moment is a reminder of how rare it is for a major American figure to break from the established script, even briefly, and how quickly the ones who control the political system moves to close the space behind them.

A total of 22 aid bags were purchased and prepared during this first round. 20 bags are being distributed directly to 20 marginalized families, while 2 bags were allocated to local helpers who assisted with sourcing, packing, transporting, and preparing the aid late into the night on June 3rd. In addition, $100 was allocated toward labor and transportation support to compensate auxiliary efforts involved in moving supplies and coordinating distribution logistics on the ground.

We believe in being transparent not only about aid delivered, but also about the real work required to make sure food reaches families safely and efficiently. None of this work happens without people giving their time, transportation, and labor to make distribution possible.

By the time everything was purchased, packed, organized, transported, and returned to the tent, it was already after midnight.

The work continued anyway.
